What to do in Sorrento on 1 January: New Year's Day ideas

What to do in Sorrento on New Year's Day: what's open, walks to Marina Grande and Punta Campanella, concerts, living nativity scenes and day trips.

On 1 January in Sorrento you can walk by the sea from the Villa Comunale to Marina Grande, enjoy a long lunch, see a nativity exhibition and end the day with a concert or a living nativity scene in a nearby town. The morning is sleepy; the afternoon comes back to life. Here are practical ideas for New Year's Day 2027, with last year's times and what to check before you go.

What's open in Sorrento on 1 January

Cafés, many restaurants and some shops in the centre open on New Year's Day, mostly from late morning. It's a public holiday, but Sorrento lives on tourism and the centre stays lively between Christmas and Epiphany.

  • Restaurants: book lunch, as many local families eat out. Several hotels offer a New Year's Day lunch or a late brunch-style breakfast for guests: ask when booking a New Year package.
  • Shops: on Corso Italia and in the old town many reopen around noon or in the afternoon.
  • Museums: in 2025/26 the Museo Correale was closed on 25–26 December and 1 January, then closed for winter from 5 January. The nativity exhibition at Villa Fiorentino (Fondazione Sorrento) opened on 1 January from 5:00 pm.
  • Pharmacies: a duty pharmacy is open; stock up on anything else on the morning of the 31st.

Walks in Sorrento on New Year's Day

Villa Comunale and Marina Piccola

Start at the Villa Comunale, the clifftop garden next to San Francesco church, with views from Vesuvius to Naples. In 2025/26 it hosted the "Christmas Garden" until 7 January, 4:00–8:00 pm. Walk down Via Luigi De Maio to Marina Piccola, the ferry harbour.

Marina Grande

From the centre, Via Marina Grande and the old Greek gate take you in about 15 minutes to the fishing village of Marina Grande: boats pulled up on the beach, colourful houses and a few seafood restaurants open. Perfect for a slow first lunch of the year. The walk back is uphill: take it easy.

Old town and puppets

In the afternoon, wander the old town lanes and Piazza Tasso. In 2025/26, from 31 December to 6 January, the square hosted traditional Neapolitan puppet shows by the Fratelli Mercurio. More ideas in New Year in Sorrento with kids.

Beyond Sorrento: the Deserto and Punta Campanella

The Deserto in Sant'Agata sui Due Golfi

The Deserto is a 1679 monastery on the hill above Sant'Agata sui Due Golfi, now home to enclosed Benedictine nuns. Its rooftop terrace overlooks both the Bay of Naples and the Gulf of Salerno. It's a ten-minute uphill walk from Sant'Agata's square. In winter, guides list reduced viewing hours (roughly 10 am–12 noon and 3–5 pm); on holidays opening isn't guaranteed, so treat it as a scenic walk even if you only see it from outside.

The Punta Campanella trail

From Termini in Massa Lubrense, a trail leads to Punta Campanella, the tip of the peninsula facing Capri, inside a marine protected area. It's downhill through olive groves on a partly paved path: about 45–60 minutes to the tower, a bit more back up. Stay safe:

  • set off by 1 pm: in early January the sun sets before 5 pm and the path is unlit;
  • wear shoes with grip: stones are slippery after rain;
  • skip it in strong wind: the point is very exposed;
  • bring water and a jacket: there's nowhere to buy anything on the way;
  • if in doubt, stop at the Termini viewpoint, which already looks onto Capri.

New Year's Day concerts and events

This year's programme comes out between late November and December; here's what was on last time:

  • Vico Equense: at noon, the New Year's concert by "I Virtuosi Napoletani", a 25-piece orchestra conducted by Massimo Santaniello, at the AEQUA cinema-theatre. Free with booking (2026).
  • Sant'Agnello: at 11:30 am the mayor's greetings in Piazza Matteotti with an aperitif and music (2026).
  • Sorrento: in 2025 the Sorrento Sinfonietta played a New Year's concert at Teatro Tasso on 1 January at 5:30 pm; in 2025/26 the concert moved to the morning of 31 December.
  • Meta: in 2025, a roaming performance of the New Year's Song from 4:30 pm. Story in Ciuccio di fuoco and the New Year's Song.
  • Living nativity scenes: on 1 January 2026, Fornacelle in Vico Equense (6–9 pm, free) and Monticchio in Massa Lubrense (6–8:30 pm) were open. See living nativity scenes.

Day trips: Capri, Naples, Pompeii

  • Capri: hydrofoils from Sorrento run in winter with fewer sailings and can be cancelled in rough seas. Check 1 January times the day before and plan your return. Many places on the island close in winter.
  • Naples: on 1 January 2026 the Naples–Sorrento Circumvesuviana ran from 7:29 am with a break from 2 to 4 pm. Details in getting around on 31 December and 1 January.
  • Pompeii: the archaeological park is normally closed on 1 January; check the official site.

New Year's Day lunch

After the big dinner, lunch on the 1st is late. Hotels open for the holidays often extend breakfast into late morning. If your package covers several nights, check what's included on 1 January: last season, for example, Hotel Il Faro offered two nights with dinner from around €320 per person and Grand Hotel La Favorita three nights from around €975 per person (indicative, to be confirmed). For lunch in town, see restaurants.
